Music plays an important role in life for all of us. Music ushers in connection. Music links the brain to events and memories that are meaningful. Music promotes relaxation, decreases isolation, increases movement, lowers stress, and improves memory. For many older adults – especially those in senior living – music provides a host of benefits, including lessening discomfort or pain without the use of medicines, improving memory, boosting moods and a feeling of independence. Many experts say that music can increase brain chemicals that generate positive feelings in people diagnosed with dementia. In many instances, music opens up avenues of communication to those with memory loss that otherwise may not be available. Music-related activities — including singing, playing musical instruments, dancing, listening to music — can spark discussions and help loved ones and family members connect. Research has also shown that regular engagement with music can improve cognition and language abilities in individuals living with dementia.
Overall, music simply creates a higher quality of life.
For seniors, however, the music we choose is very important. The music that is offered, should be:
- Familiar – eras and genres that older adults know
- Enjoyable – favorites that they love
- Encourage a positive mood – songs that set toes tapping and bring a smile to the heart
- Interactive – music is intended for everyone to join in and be a part!
